In 2003, The Ring rated Sánchez number 88 on the list of 100 greatest punchers of all time. In 2002, he was named the 24th greatest fighter of the past 80 years by The Ring magazine. The Ring magazine named both him, and Sugar Ray Leonard, as Fighter of the Year in 1981. In 1991, Sánchez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He is also the uncle of Salvador Sánchez II. Sánchez died on August 12, 1982, in a car accident from Querétaro to San Luis Potosí.
